JOB PURPOSE

The purpose of this role is to Partner the Automation and Digital Lead in driving a world-class Instrumentation and Control program at Unilever Boksburg Powders Factory, the second biggest factory of it’s type in the world. Manage daily operations five-person team, covering operational work, maintenance, troubleshooting, incident management, and all related activities to ensure operational effectiveness.
To Identify improvement areas in site instrumentation and controls, execute improvement projects on time and within budget. Ensure cybersecurity program and robust business continuity plans are in place.
WHAT WILL YOUR MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES BE
Recommend and Design Hardware / Software Operational Improvements (15%)
- Recommend hardware/software for factory use, considering cost/benefit.
- Design control system hardware/software solutions.
- Commission new systems with technicians.
- Manage PLC networking, OPC servers, and HMI interfaces
- Ensure P&IDs are up-to-date and match the control system.
Project Management and Business Improvement Implementation (15%)
- Design, execute, and approve Capex projects.
- Document and train users on operations.
- Train maintenance and operating personnel on new control systems.
- Manage project budgets and ensure compliance.
- Oversee ICE OPEX budget and equipment obsolescence planning.
Maintenance, Fault-finding & Continuous Operations (40%)
- Ensure Instrument, Control, and Electrical Infrastructure is maintained to meet safety standards.
- Ensure compliance with legal and statutory requirements.
- Develop and implement PPM calendar for ICE and cybersecurity.
- Ensure team keep control systems operational through fault-finding and corrections.
- Manage system integrity, backups, and disaster recovery plans.
- Ensure effective response to ICE-related breakdowns, maintenance, and upgrades.
- Upon escalation, resolve more challenging breakdowns.
SHE (5%)
- Ensure compliance with relevant laws and standards by own team and vendors.
- Support SHE department in accident and incident investigations.
- Assist Ops with start-up checklists (PSSR).
Supervise Cyber Security (5%)
- Supervise work of the Cybersecurity and OT Analyst on site (TA3 role)
- Support them in implementation of the factory’s cybersecurity program.
- Follow factory cybersecurity standards and guidance.
- Assist that role, local teams, and global team with response to malicious threats.
- Complete and communicate incident reporting procedures.
Obsolescence and Disaster Recovery (5%)
- Develop and test disaster recovery plans for cybersecurity attacks, data loss, or theft.
- Assign clear ownership and involve the whole site.
- Document systems, owners, and criticality.
- Know backup locations and restoration times.
- Create a stakeholder and communication plan.
- Plan for obsolescence with an asset usage roadmap.
Team Management (15%)
- Act as escalation point for technical and people issues.
- Manage the ICE team, including Technicians, Artisans, and Interns.
- Oversee daily operations and team administration.
- Develop team strategy and lead quarterly performance reviews.
- Foster a harmonious and high-performance culture.
- Utilize engagement and recognition tools to drive performance.
- Handle industrial relations, including disciplinary actions.
- Resolve conflicts within the team and facilitate resolution in subordinate teams.
WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED
Experiences & Qualifications
- B.Sc Mechatronics/Electronic/Computer/Electro-Mechanical Engineering and 2-5 years experience of instrument control and automation.
- Or B.Tech (T4/S5 –Mechatronics/Electro-Mechanical/Electronic/Computer Engineering) and 5-7 years experience of instrument control and automation.
- Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access)
- SAP/PMS (Plant maintenance systems).
- Knowledge or familiarity with OT security solutions and remote access technologies
- Strong knowledge of Siemens or Rockwell PLC Programming and fault finding
- Strong Knowlege of SCADA Systems (e.g. Ignition SCADA, FactoryTalk View or WinCC)
- Strong knowledge of Fieldbus networks (e.g. Profinet, Profibus DP and Fieldbus networks)
- Strong understanding of legacy A&C concepts and technology and digital OT and Industry 4.0 technologies in terms of network infrastructure, integration with business information systems, and the challenges faced from a cyber security perspective.
- Good understanding of Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES)
- Experience with various field instrumentation (e.g flowmeters, level transmitters, temperature transmitters etc)
- Experience with cyber security controls and best practice

Environment
Internal
- Internal will include the TA3s/IT/ICE Technicians responsible for executing the cybersecurity work at sites, the Engineering managers and SUDs who are accountable for Cybersecurity, adjacent functions like Engineering, IT, and Safety within whom plans need to be aligned, and finally, the global cybersecurity community
External
- External environment will include third party manufacturers and logistics partners with whom we work closely and for whom cybersecurity risks needs to be considered.
